Finally he grew so curious that he threw it open. The light of the sun was so bright that it blinded Coyote’s eyes. The sun and the moon laughed and flew far away, up into the sky, where they are today.

Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple compound in Central Java in Indonesia, located approximately 18 km east of Yogyakarta.
The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the largest Hindu temples in south-east Asia. It is characterized by its tall and pointed architecture, typical of Hindu temple architecture, and by the 47m high central building inside a large complex of individual temples.

Politeknik Keuangan Negara Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara masih menjadi primadona bagi siswa yang ingin melanjutkan jenjang pendidikannya selepas SMA. Hal ini diuktikan dengan jumlah pendaftar terbanyak diantara sekolah kedinasan lain yang dibuka pemerintah beberapa waktu lalu. Tingkat kesulitan merupakan salah satu poin yang utama. Seleksi penerimaan hampir disamakan seperti penerimaan calon pegawai negeri sipil (CPNS). Pendaftar mesti melalui berbagai tahapan tes dengan nilai ambang batas yang harusnya diatas rata- rata pendaftar lain. Oleh karena itu sangat dibutuhkan strategi untuk lulus pada nilai ambang batas baik SKD (Seleksi Kompetensi Dasar), TPA (Tes Potensi Akademik), maupun TBI (Tes Bahasa Inggris).

Tentang tes TBI STAN, informasi pada tahun 2018 lalu, Soal bahasa Inggris terdiri dari 30 (tiga puluh) soal dengan materi grammar (structure and written expression) dan materi reading text. Meskipun soal hanya berjumlah tiga puluh, tetapi jumlah nilai ini akan menentukan ambang lolos tidaknya para peserta ujian.

Noun Clause merupakan clause yang digunakan sebbagai pengganti noun dan tentu saja berfungsi sebagai kata benda ( noun). Dikutip dari buku Modern English, Marcella Frank, ada empat jenis noun clause berdasarkan kalimat asalnya, yaitu Statement, Question, Request dan Exclamation.

Bentuk Reported Speech dalam bahasa Inggris disebut juga dengan bentuk indirect speech. Bentuk ini digunakan ketika kita ingin memberi tahu seseorang apa yang dikatakan oleh seseorang lainnya. Beberapa kata kerja yang digunakan misalnya kata "say, tell, ask, dan sebagainya."

Dalam soal, bentuk reported speech biasanya diinstruksikan dengan merubah bentuk direct speech menjadi reported speech atau indirect speech. Niagara Falls is the most famous water fall in the world because of its beauty and immense size. Niagara Falls is part of the Niagara River. The Niagara is a short river, just 35 miles (56 kilometers) long. It connects Lake Erie and Lake Ontario in eastern North America. East of the river is the United States. West of the river is Canada. About halfway between the two lakes, a sharp drop in the river makes Niagara Falls.
Niagara Falls is actually two giant waterfalls and one smaller one. Goat Island, in New York state, lies between the two main falls. One big waterfall, called American Falls, is on the U.S. side of the river. American Falls has a fairly straight edge. The waterfall is 1,075 feet (328 meters) wide and 182 feet (55 meters) high. A small part of American Falls, located near Goat Island, is called Bridal Veil Falls.
The biggest of the two giant waterfalls is in Canada and is known as the Canadian Falls. It’s also called the Horseshoe Falls because of its horseshoe shape. The curved edge of the Canadian Falls measures 2,200 feet (670 meters) wide, and the water drops 187 feet (57 meters). The Canadian Falls carries nine times more water than the American Falls.
Niagara Falls is a popular tourist attraction. Millions of people come each year to watch the spectacular waterfalls. You can take a boat trip to see the falls from below. You can also watch from observation decks above or beside the falls. You can even enter the Cave of the Winds, a path that takes you to the base of Bridal Veil Falls. Visitors must wear bright-yellow rain jackets to stay dry.
Niagara Falls makes an enormous, ground-shaking roar and a huge cloud of water mist. Rainbows shine through the mist. At night, the falls are lit with colored lights, creating a brilliant display.

The word tornado is from the Spanish word tronada, which means “thunderstorm”. TOEFL Preparation ; Latihan Soal Tipe Structure and Written Expression TOEFL

Soal structure and written expression dalam ujian TOEFL diujikan dalam sesi kedua setelah uji listening. Alokasi waktu untuk menjawab soal tersebut hanya 25 menit. Lumayan singkat bila merujuk pada jumlah dan level kesulitan soal. Bentuk soal tipe tersebut ditujukan untuk menguji kemampuan dalam mengenali formal written English. Soal structure and written expression merupakan dua tipe soal yang berbeda, berikut penjelasan singkatnya,

Tipe Structure
Tipe soal ini dibuat untuk mengukur kemampuan kita mengenali bahasa yang tepat dalam standar bahasa Inggris tertulis ( standard written English). Pertanyaan dalam soal structure merupakan soal incomplete sentence (kalimat rumpang), dengan pilihan jawaban (A), (B), (C), dan (D) yang berupa kata atau frase. Pilihlah salah satu kata atau frase yang tepat untuk melengkapi kalimat tersebut.   Beberapa tips yang bisa dicoba dalam menjawab pertanyaan structure adalah sebagai berikut :
  • Baca kalimat secara keseluruhan, kemudian coba masukkan jawaban (A) dalam rumpang kalimat tersebut.
  • Bila tidak benar, analisislah mengapa kalimat tersebut tidak benar.
  • Bila pilihan jawaban (A) bukanlah jawaban yang benar, maka cobalah pada pilihan jawaban (B), (C) dan (D).
  • Cobalah untuk mengingat pola atau rumus yang benar kalimat yang digunakan.
Inilah contoh pertanyaan pola structure yang saya kutip dari Buku Cliffs TOEFL Preparation Guide.

Pembahasan : Pilihan jawaban (A) bisa langsung kita hilangkan karena penggunaan who tidak tepat dengan verbal structure-nya "is being lived". Untuk "A life" mungkin saja bisa diterapkan, namun untuk "a person" tidak cocok untuk diterapkan. "Live" biasanya tidak bertindak sebagai complement, oleh karena itu tidak bisa dijadikan kalimat pasif. Pada pilihan (B),  bukanlah jawaban yang benar, karena "does" dan "in the" tidak diperlukan dalam kalimat tersebut. Pilihan jawaban (C), merupakan pilihan yang benar, karena memenuhi syarat  "subject + verb + (complement) + (modifier), dan untuk pilihan jawaban (D), bukanlah pilihan yang benar karena tidak sesuai dengan aturan tersebut diatas (subject + verb + (complement) + (modifier)).

Tipe Written Expression
Dalam tipe written expression, setiap kalimat memiliki empat kata atau frase yang digaris bawahi. Kata atau frase yang digarisbawahi di tandai dengan (A), (B), (C), an (D). Salah satu dari kata atau frase tersebut "salah", dalam artian harus diubah menjadi pola yang benar agar supaya kalimat tersebut menjadi tepat. 

Sebagai contoh, berikut ini adalah soal tipe written expression.

In the(A) United States, there (B) are much (C) holidays throughout the (D) year.

Pembahasan : Penggunaan "much" tidak tepat diterapkan karena kata "holidays" merupakan kata benda yang bisa dihitung (count noun), oleh karena itu kata "much" tidak tepat dan seharusnya diubah menjadi kata "many" untuk lebih tepatnya.
Nah, untuk melatih kemampuan anda dalam menghadapi ujian TOEFL khususnya dalam soal tipe structure and written expression, berikut saya kumpulkan soal tipe tersebut dengan jumlah soal sebanyak 40 butir soal yang terdiri dari 15 soal tipe structure dan 25 soal tipe written expression dengan materi soal yang dipilih sesuai dengan tingkat kesulitan level uji TOEFL.
