Degree of comparison digunakan untuk membandingkan sesuatu hal misalnya benda, orang, binatang atau yang lainnya. Tiga bentuk dalam degree of comparison yang yaitu

1. Positive; membandingkan dua hal yang sama
2. Comparative ; membandingkan dua hal yang berbeda 
3. Superlative ; membandingkan satu dengan banyak hal

Soal tentang degree of comparison banyak ditemui dalam bentuk soal incomplete dialogue. Selain penguasaan konteks, pemahaman rumus menjadi sangat penting dalam menjawab soal tentang degree of comparison.

Positive Degree

Membandingkan dua hal yang sama dalam sebuah pernyataan atau kalimat. Ciri- ciri penggunaanya adalah memakai ;

as ... as

the same as 

Silahkan isikan titik titik ditengah dengan adjective atau adverb. Beberapa jenis adjective seperti easy, fast, light, big, thin, small, etc dan beberapa adverb seperti quickly, fast, gently, carefully, etc.

Contoh: 

The test is as difficult as we imagine.

The price of this T-shirt is the same as the price of this skirt.

Comparative Degree

Membandingkan dua hal yang berbeda. Ciri- ciri penggunaannya adalah

.... er    + than

 more ...  + than

Silahkan isikan titik titik  dengan adjective atau adverb. Beberapa jenis adjective seperti easy, fast, light, big, thin, small, etc dan beberapa adverb seperti quickly, fast, gently, carefully, etc.

Penggunaan more ...  hanya digunakan bila kata sifat/ adjective terdiri dari lebih dari satu suku kata ( syllable). Beberapa kata sifat yang terdiri lebih dari satu suku kata adalah beautiful, delicious, diligent, playful, etc.

Contoh :

• The Netbook is more expensive than PC
• I like living in village because village is more comfortable than in a city.

Superlative Degree

Digunakan untuk membandingkan satu hal dengan sebuah kelompok yang anggotanya banyak, misalkan salah satu anak dalam sebuah kelas, dibandingkan dengan semua anak di kelas.

The ... est        in, of, among, 

The most ....    in, of, among

Contoh :

This is the most expensive computer in the store. ( Ini adalah komputer yang termahal di toko)

Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. ( Gunung Everest adalah gunung tertinggi di dunia)

Penggunaan superlative degree selalu diawali dengan "the" dan penggunaan kata sifat yang terdiri dari lebih dari dua syllable (suku kata) menggunakan "the most".
