Pada pembelajaran bahasa Inggris kali ini, kami ingin memberikan beberapa tips dan juga contoh teks dalam menjawab pertanyaan seputar reading comprehension dalam soal Ujian Nasional (UN) SMK. Soal reading merupakan soal dimana kemampuan memahami bacaan diujikan dalam bahasa Inggris tertulis. Skop pertanyaan dalam reading Ujian Nasional (UN) SMK berkutat pada seputar menentukan gagasan utama/ informasi rinci/ informasi tersirat dalam teks dialog, teks esai pendek dan teks fungsional pendek tersebut (baca juga : Kisi- kisi ujian Nasional SMK 2015/ 2016). Pengetahuan anda tentang tata bahasa (grammar), kosakata (vocabulary) akan diuji juga dalam bagian tipe soal ini.
A. Strategi sebelum menjawab pertanyaan bacaan.
Adapun strategi menjawab soal bacaan dalam Ujian Nasional (UN) SMK adalah sebagai berikut :
- Bacalah pertanyaannya terlebih dahulu baru kemudian pahami maksudnya dan baru dicari jawabannya di dalam teks.
- Jangan pernah membaca teks atau bacaan dari awal sampai akhir.
- Cobalah untuk menebak mana jawaban yang paling tepat, bila tetap tidak bisa menemukan jawabannya, anda harus tetap memilih salah satu jawaban.
- Jangan terpaku pada pertanyaan yang sulit, cobalah manfaatkan waktu semaksimal mungkin untuk mengerjakan soal lain yang dirasa lebih mudah.
B. Memahami tipe- tipe pertanyaan reading dalam soal UN Bahasa Inggris SMK
1. Topik/ Tema
Topik utama merupakan subjek utama bacaan, tentang apa bacaan tersebut. Topik atau tema bisa berupa; inti tulisan ( the text is about) atau judul tulisan ( title). Tips dalam mencari topik adalah sebagai berikut :
- Baca dahulu baris pertama dan kedua paragraf jika ada satu atau lebih paragraf.
- Temukan kata kunci atau keyword yang selalu diulang- ulang baik pada bagian awal, tengah atau akhir terutama bagian kesimpulan.
- Kata kunci ini dapat berupa persamaan kata atau kata yang sama artinya.

2. Tujuan (purpose/ aim)

5. Inference
Kesimpulan yang diperoleh berdasarkan fakta dalam bacaan. Tips nya adalah dengan mencocokkan jawaban dengan fakta dalam teks tersebut. Keyword sangat penting bagi pertanyaan tipe ini, keyword bisa berupa sinonim atau persamaan kata.
