Cara Mengubah Bentuk Adjective Clauses Menjadi Adjective Phrases

Pada pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris berikut ini, kami akan membahas mengenai bagaimana mengubah bentuk kalimat dengan adjective clause menjadi adjective phrases. Pembahasan ini masih berkaitan dengan pembahasan kami sebelumnya tentang relative pronouns. Nah, sebelum lebih lanjut ke dalam pembahasan mengenai adjective clause dan adjective phrase, berikut ini akan kami bahas terlebih dahulu mengenai pengertian clause dan phrases. Clause merupakan kelompok kata yang terdiri dari subject dan verb.  Sedangkan phrase adalah kelompok kata yang tidak terdiri atas subject dan verb. Adjective Phrase merupakan bentuk reduksi dari adjective clause. Hampir sama dengan adjective clause, adjective phrase menerangkan noun, namun tidak terdiri atas subject dan verb.
Contoh :

• Clause : The man who is standing under the tree is Mr. Nino.
• Phrase : The man standing under the tree is Mr. Nino

Berdasakan contoh diatas, bentuk kalimat yang pertama menunjukkan adjective clause dan kemudian kalimat tersebut diubah menjadi adjective clause pada kalimat kedua. kedua kalimat tersebut mempunyai arti yang sama. Namun hanya adjective clauses yang memiliki subject pronoun seperti who, which, atau that yang bisa dimodifikasi menjadi adjective phrases. Untuk lebih jelasnya perhatikan contoh di bawah ini.

• Clause : The girl who is reading a book is Linda. 
• Phrase : The girl reading a book is Linda. 
• Clause : The lady whom I met last night was my teacher.
• Phrase :  -

Cara Merubah Adjective Clauses menjadi Adjective Phrases
Setelah kita memahami konsep dasar diatas, berikut ini adalah cara dan aturan dalam merubah Adjective Clause menjadi Adjective Phrase.
1. Subject Pronoun pada kalimat dengan Adjective Clause dihilangkan dan begitu juga bentuk BE yang digunakan sebagai kata kerja.
Contoh :

• Clause : The boys who are waiting for the bus is from China.
• Phrase : The boys waiting for the bus is from China.

• Clause : The ideas which are conveyed in the meeting are interesting.
• Phrase : The ideas conveyed in the meeting are interesting.

• Clause : The book that is on the table is mine.
• Phrase : The book on the table is mine.

2. Bila tidak ada bentuk BE dalam Adjective Clause, maka subject pronoun bisa dihilangkan kemudian ubah kata kerja (verb) menjadi bentuk verb-ing.
Contoh :

• Clause : The fence which surrounds our house is made of wood.
• Phrase : The fence surrounding our house is made of wood.

• Clause : The people who attend the party got some presents.
• Phrase : The people attending the party got some presents.

3. Bila dalam adjective clause terdapat comma, maka dalam adjective phrase juga harus terdapat comma juga.
Contoh :

• Clause : Mr. Jokowi, who is the president of Indonesia, will give a speech at the conference.
• Phrase : Mr. Jokowi, the president of Indonesia, will give a speech at the conference.

Dan berikut latihan tentang perubahan adjective clause menjadi adjective phrases 

1. They live in a house that was built in 1890.
2. We have an apartment which overlooks the park.
3. Do you know the woman who is coming toward us?
4. The doctor who examined the sick child was very gentle.
5. The novel which is written by your sister is interesting.
6. The students who sits next to me is from Canada.
7. The book which is on the table is mine.
8. The taxi driver who took me to the airport was friendly.
9. Jakarta, which is the capital city of Indonesia, is a business center in Southeast Asia.
10. Did you get the message which concerned  the special meeting?

Jawaban :

1. They live in a house built in 1890.
2. We have an apartment overlooking the park.
3. Do you know the woman coming toward us?
4. The doctor examining the sick child was very gentle.
5. The novel written by your sister is interesting.
6. The students sitting next to me is from Canada.
7. The book on the table is mine.
8. The taxi driver taking me to the airport was friendly.
9. Jakarta,the capital city of Indonesia, is a business center in Southeast Asia.
10. Did you get the message concerning the special meeting?
